Structure

April 5, 2010

Every year it’s the same story. As the school year comes to an end, I pretty much let go of any semblance of order or structure, and just work like hell to finish things. I tell myself, I’ll re-organize during the summer, and come September I’ll be structured once more. But after September, little by little, the structure falls to the wayside.

I’ve noticed a similar pattern in my design work. No matter how much attention I pay to the structure of a design, the grid so-to-speak, once I compose content the structure begins to lose importance, and it’s the content that takes over.

Giving yourself structure, some sort of rule of order, is a good way to start. But I don’t feel like it’s wrong to escape from the structure once things start to take on a life of their own.
